Cake Boxes

By

Without much surprise, cake is something that everybody can and does enjoy. As such, this dessert is often used in special occasions such as weddings, festive holidays and birthdays to compliment the celebration. Being such an essential component, you would ideally want the cake to be as good when served as when it comes out of the oven. When I say "good", I of course mean both taste-wise and appearance. This means that safely transporting the cake from the bakery to the destination is of utmost importance.

Therefore, this is the primary function of cake boxes. Whatever the occasion you are celebrating, the last thing you want is to open the box to find a pile of unrecognizable mess which may potentially put more than a dent to your day or night. To minimize such disasters from happening, you need to choose the most appropriate cake box. There are also other factors that will impact of the decision, some of which will be discussed in this hub. I hope that the points presented here will help clarify some questions you may have.

Minimum Requirements

Since protecting the cake is priority, this should be at the forefront of your mind. Generally, cake boxes are made out of cardboard mainly because this is an economical choice. Cardboard material is fine, but you should ensure that the quality used by the manufacturer is of high standard. It should be thick and sturdy enough to securely hold the cake. I understand that when you think of cardboard, your immediate thought is probably that it must not be very durable. But this is not necessarily the case.

Depending on the type of cake being placed inside the box, you may require inserts (also called cake holders) as well. These inserts are a separate piece of cardboard placed inside the box to help keep the cake from moving about. Muffin and cupcake boxes use this mainly.

Purpose of Cake Boxes

As stated earlier on, the primary purpose of pretty much all cake boxes is to protect the cake inside. However, there are different types of boxes that more suitable for specific purposes compared to others.

Since cake boxes are constructed from cardboard, you won't be able to see the contents without opening the box. This is fine when you are only going to use the box for just transporting the cake between locations.I assume that by the time you transport the cake, you already know what is inside.

However, if you are a cake shop owner, when customers walk into your bakery shop and want to browse through your selection, they would want to be able to see the cakes themselves. Photographs have their place but being able to see the actual cakes would be helpful as well. One way of course is have cake samples sitting inside your display case. An alternative is to get bakery cake boxes that are either completely made from clear plastic or that have a clear plastic window. This feature will allow customers to convenient see the cake before buying.

The exterior of basic cardboard cake boxes tend to be plain white or ivory with no markings or decorations. If the cakes (or slices of cake) are intended to be gifts such as at wedding receptions, then presentation needs to be factored into deciding on the cake box. You can easily find a wide range of designs for cake boxes which can be as simple as a different color such as pink cake boxes or involve something more elaborate. Examples include embossing, heart shape printing, champagne flute printing, 3 dimensional bow shapes, etc.

Different cakes

This is something obvious but requires emphasis here because of its importance. The size of the cake will determine the size of the box and whether inserts are required. For example if you intend to store muffins or cupcakes, then you’ll need inserts. Additionally, you can get different sized inserts – for mini cupcakes, standard cupcakes and muffins. The box that’s need to hold birthday cakes will be obviously different to wedding cake favor boxes.

Even for a single occasion, a few different kinds of cake boxes may be needed. For example, in a wedding, each tier of the wedding cake may be transported in separate large wedding cake boxes for assembly at the destination. And then, for those that want to hand out slices of the wedding cake as gifts to the guests, cake slice boxes are used.

Budget

The amount of money that you can allocate to cake boxes can be a major constraint. Knowing how many you require and aiming to order in bulk can help you secure discounts. Also, looking for suppliers that provide wholesale cake boxes can contribute to lower costs.
