Why Corner Bookcases?

You may think that there isn’t much to choosing a bookcase. As long as the bookcase can hold all your books and it blends with your room, you’ll be ok right? Well, I guess if space in your home is a luxury, then yes. However, if you are strapped for space or you simply want to more efficiently make use of the available space, then this approach is inadequate. For example, if you are staying in a student dorm room or a small apartment, you can’t afford to waste space.

Ask yourself, “What area of a room you often find difficult to make use of or fit a furniture in?”. The corners right? In my personal experience, they are simply quite awkward. If you want to and can use the corners of your room, then you should consider a corner bookcase.

Where to Buy a Corner Bookcase

In today’s age, there are numerous choices in terms of sourcing a corner bookcase, each with their benefits and drawbacks. Allow me to list some of the common possibilities:

Local Furniture Maker
If you want a personalized wood corner bookcase or if you can’t find just the right bookcase you need from stores then you can get one designed and custom built by a professional furniture maker. Simply provide clear specifications of your requirements such as the material, the number of shelves, all the dimensions, the finish (if any), the color, etc. Of course, you would expect this option to be more expensive than purchasing a generic pre-made bookcase from a store.

Retail Store
There are several different stores you can approach including the furniture section of department stores (e.g. Target and Wal-Mart), furniture specialist stores, chain furniture conglomerates (e.g. IKEA). The corner bookcases from these places vary from each other is a number of ways – price range, quality, design. I would definitely recommend shopping around and not settle for the first place you look at. There is always a special sale just around the corner. A very popular IKEA corner bookcase is the Billy Corner Bookcase range. I found it to be affordable and yet durable to hold my books.

Garage Sale
If you don’t mind buying and owning a second hand bookcase, then this is an excellent option. You can often find bargains and end up with a great quality bookcase without forking out too much money. This is also a good source for finding an antique corner bookcase if that is what you are after. The possible downside here is that being a second hand good, the quality might be compromised. Hence, make sure to inspect the item well as the seller is unlikely to have a return policy.

Online
There are endless upon endless of sites that sell corner bookcases. They range from the generic outlet stores like Amazon to e-Commerce sites specializing in bookcases like Book Cases Galore. Another wildly popular site which is similar in concept to the garage sale is eBay. The major drawback with buying a corner bookcase online is that you can’t physically inspect the item before purchase. You have to rely on photos provided by the seller. Another reason some people are reluctant to buy their bookcases online is the chance of damage during transit or worse, being lost altogether.

Choosing a Corner Bookcase

There is certainly no shortage of choices in what corner bookcases you can get. Taking time to consider your requirements, doing some research and shopping around will definitely pay off at the end of the day. Here are some questions to consider:

  • How much floor space do you have? There are free-standing as well as wall-mounted corner bookcases such as the corner Spacesaver bookcase available.
  • How much vertical space do you have? This will affect the limitation on the height and position of your bookcase.
  • What is the range of sizes of your books? Pre-made corner bookcases come in various heights, widths and depths. Additionally, you could have from 2 shelves up to several shelves, and each shelf could be adjustable.
  • Are you particular about the appearance? For example, if you want to have a wood corner bookcase, it could be made from oak, cherry, pine, mahogany, etc. Do you want the bookcase to blend with the surrounding walls or be in contrast? You could go for a plain white corner bookcase, a sleek looking black corner bookcase, or unfinished corner bookcase.
