Pine Coffee Table
72If you have read my other hubs on coffee tables, you’ll know that there is a huge range available in furniture stores, whether nearby your location or online. This wide selection is mainly to cater for the varying tastes of homeowners. For example, if you wish to achieve a rustic look in your living room, you might go for coffee tables made from solid wood or at least laminated with some sort of wood finish.
In this hub, I’ll have a look at some of the different pine coffee tables you can get. So why is there a preference for pine wood? I think that one of major reasons is that compared with coffee tables made from hardwood such as oak and mahogany, pine is cheaper. This factor is of greater influence particularly in the current economic climate. Maybe once you have read through this, you’ll get a better idea of what you want for your own living room.
Quality
If money is no object for you and you like the appearance of pine wood, then you should consider a solid pine wood coffee table. Just make sure that you check with the retailer or manufacturer whether the particular table you are interested is solid. Some pine coffee tables that may appear to be bargain are in fact made from some sort of engineered wood material such as fiberboard. The surface is then laminated with pine wood giving the look of pine.
When looking at pine coffee tables, inspect the surface of the wood if possible. High quality tables should exhibit minimal knots. Such imperfections do give your table a unique appearance but make sure they are not too severe such that the structure becomes compromised.
Styles
A rustic pine coffee table isn’t only suitable for traditional or old style living room. There are contemporary looking pine coffee tables that have a minimalist and practical design.
If old style is more to your liking, those are available as well. For example, if you want to achieve a classic Asian or Oriental look, you can get an antique pine coffee table with cabriole legs which appear prominently in ancient Chinese furniture. For those unfamiliar with this type of table leg design, it basically refers to the ‘S’ shape of the leg. The upper curve bows outwards while the lower curve bows inwards.
Also, pine coffee tables don’t just come in one shape. If your living room isn’t suitable for rectangular shaped tables, you could choose either a square pine coffee table or a round pine coffee table. They are usually more preferred by those who have small living rooms.
More often than not, you’ll likely find a pine coffee table that will match your room as well as your taste.
Storage
Functionality is just as important as the appearance of the pine coffee table if not more so. For some people, a simple design where items can only be placed on the table top is sufficient. You might want the empty space underneath the table so that you can stretch your legs.
On the other hand, there are people who prefer a tidy and clear table top and hence consider additional storage space to be essential. If this is the case for you, have a look at pine wood coffee tables with some kind of storage compartment. The common variety includes either a single tier shelf at the bottom, drawers or even a combination of both.
Depending on the overall size of the coffee table, it can come with just one drawer or multiple drawers configured in different positions. For example, a rectangular pine wood coffee table could have its drawers configured such that there’s one wide drawer at the bottom stretching end-to-end and 2 shorter drawers side-by-side above the first drawer.
Another innovative style of storage is a trunk or chest common with Mexican pine coffee table. These tables usually have extremely short legs (there are more likely stumps) just enough that the base is raised above ground in order to maximize storage space. The storage compartment is accessed by lifting up the table top, which either opens up fully or partially (in the middle for example).
