Solid Wood File Cabinet
73In the current modern world, there is a trend around organizations to reduce use of paper. More and more information is transferred and stored digitally mainly because you can simply store a greater capacity without occupying much physical space. On top of this, there is a general consensus that doing so is more environmentally friendly.
However, at the moment, we can’t complete escape use of paper. It brings about a certain level of convenience and is very much ingrained in our society. As such, we require some mechanism to store and organize all the paperwork. This is where file cabinets come in.
There are many different file cabinets you can get in the market and amongst them all, wood file cabinets appear to be very popular. There is definitely still a lot of people who have a preference for the traditional look and elegance that a natural wood surface brings to an office room. For example, hardwood is very popular, and people tend to go for an oak or cherry wood file cabinet. Since even amongst wood file cabinets, the range of styles available is large, the choice can sometimes be confusing, so I want to lay out some of the common varieties you are likely to come across.
Vertical Wood File Cabinet
If available floor space is an issue for you, then you might want to consider a vertical wood file cabinet. This particular type are tall and deep allowing you to make use of the vertical space you have in your office and saving on the lateral space used for other things. These file cabinets will still allow you to hold letter and legal sized files, but it is important to check the specifications before purchasing one. Also, ensure that the drawers extend fully as this will allow you to easily access the files stored in the rear end.
Lateral Wood File Cabinet
Sometimes, a tall vertical wood file cabinet may not be practical because of the inconvenience of reaching the top drawer. For people who may not be tall, they might need a step stool to access the contents on the upper ends of the cabinet. Also, some people may find it easier to browse through files from the side of the drawers. So if this is the case for you and if you have sufficient floor space in your office, then wood lateral file cabinets may be a possible solution. They are long as supposed to being deep, and instead of having the pages of the files facing you as you open the drawers, letter and A4 sized files are stored sideways.
Flat Wood File Cabinet
If you work in the construction industry or are an artist, then you’ll likely have very large sized paper such blueprints of buildings, schematics and artwork of sorts. You can either store them flat or roll them up. If the latter option poses a problem because it may cause damage (e.g. creasing) or if you find it inconvenient to roll and unroll then a flat wood file cabinet may be more suitable instead. However, just note that they do take quite a bit of floor space.
Rolling Wood File Cabinet
This is also sometimes referred to as mobile wood file cabinet and as the name suggests, it is essentially the same as your typical free-standing file cabinet with the addition of four wheels at the bottom. This feature allows you to easily move the entire cabinet whenever you want if you decide to rearrange your office space or relocated to another room.
Locking Wood File Cabinet
If you need a wooden file cabinet for the purpose of securing confidential documents, then a locking wood file cabinet is something you would want to consider. Some file cabinets allow you to lock individual drawers while with others, you can lock multiple drawers with a single lock. However, be sure to check how effective the locking mechanism works as some file cabinets come with poor quality locks that merely act as a weak visual deterrent.
Different sizes
The choice of the right sized drawers and the number of drawers will depend on the size of your files and the quantity of files you currently have as well as you can expect to have, respectively. The two most common are the 2 drawer wood file cabinet and the 4 drawer wood file cabinet. Although the 2 drawer variety may hold less overall, it tends to fit under a desk allowing you to better utilize space in your office and also more convenient access.
