Plastic storage boxes are truly one of the most useful storage devices created by humankind. They are used by all sorts of people for various purposes – for example, in schools, by individuals like you and me, hospitals, businesses, in industrial settings, to just name a few. There is such an enormous range from which to choose, you are bound to find something that suits your needs.

In this article, I’ll give an overview of the different kinds of plastic storage boxes and the different usages that you may come across. After reading this, you might identify something that would be appropriate for the item you want to store.

Plastic Shoe Storage Boxes

If you have a lot of shoes that you are not currently using and are unnecessarily taking up valuable space in your home, a large plastic storage box is an ideal solution. These boxes are also great if you are moving house and need to temporarily store your precious shoes for transportation. They are relatively cheap, lightweight and have lids that clip onto the container itself to secure the contents. You can also stack them up onto each other, allowing you to make use of any vertical space.

Plastic Food Storage Boxes

In the home, it is quite common to need some form of container in which to hold food (e.g. leftovers from dinner on the previous night). Sometimes, you may not want to use glass containers as they are often more expensive and are prone to breaking when accidentally dropped (e.g. during hand washing). That’s where plastic food storage boxes can come to the rescue. If you drop a plastic box, it is much less likely to break.

As a common basic feature, good quality plastic food storage boxes are safe to microwave, and to be placed in dishwashers and freezers. There is actually a quite a variety you can get depending what food you intend to keep. For example, for storing rice, flour, cereal, and soups, you can buy a 30cm tall rectangular based (with round corners) box with a lid. The lid has a flip-style opening on one end allowing you to pour out the contents without needing to remove the entire lid.

Plastic food storage boxes are not just used at home. There are large and much tougher plastic storage boxes designed for usage by restaurants to store their daily supplies of various food. Aside from being dishwasher and freezer safe, the industrial strength plastic ensures they are resistant to breaking and the tight fitting lids ensures high level of freshness.

Clear plastic storage boxes are often preferred as you can easily see the contents and quickly know if the food has gone bad.

Plastic File Storage Boxes

Do you have piles and piles of loose paper, manila folders or binder files sitting in your office needing to be archived away? Well, with plastic file storage boxes, you won’t have an excuse not to do so. These containers are water resistant and come with lids that seal the contents inside thanks to foam inserts on the underside of the lid. Once you close the latches on either side, the box would be shut air tight, protecting it from dust and moisture in the environment.

Plastic CD Storage Boxes and Plastic Photo Storage Boxes

CD racks, shelves and photo albums are not the only way to store your favorite music collections or pictures from your last vacation. If you want a relatively cheap alternative that also uses space efficiently, then plastic storage boxes could be the answer. With these specialized boxes, you can sort each CD, DVD or photo in whatever you see fit, such as chronological order, or categorized by theme.

Heavy Duty Plastic Storage Boxes

Plastic storage boxes aren’t just for everyday home items. If you are in the construction business for example, and often travel between work sites, there are large plastic storage boxes that are designed to withstand a relatively heavy weight as well as rough handling. A typical heavy duty plastic storage box has a padlock loop allowing you to lock the lid, as well as wheels on one end and handles on both sides giving you the option to pull the box along or lift it with ease. These outdoor plastic storage boxes are also often used by recreational campers to carry supplies or fishing equipment.

An excellent example of a heavy duty plastic storage box is the Rubbermaid ActionPacker. It is tough and designed specifically for outdoor usage. It should be noted that the company does not just supply outdoor type boxes. There are also Rubbermaid plastic storage boxes for other storing needs.

Under Bed Plastic Storage Boxes

How this particular range of plastic storage boxes is distinct from the other types is that they are fairly shallow. Hence the name – "under bed". Given that a typical bed frame doesn't sit very high above the floor, these boxes have been designed to neatly fit under a bed. Regardless, I strongly recommend that you still carry out the appropriate measurements before purchasing one of these to ensure correct fit. Another feature that come with some underbed plastic storage boxes are wheels. This helps with taking out and putting back the box under the bed by simply sliding it in and out.
