Some people seem to have all the luck and you never hear them having pimples during their lifetime. And even when they do have pimples, they are minor, in isolated areas, and they quickly disappear with little effort not needing to even worry a bit about how to get rid of a pimple. However, the rest of us who aren’t blessed with such seemingly pimple resistant skin have to face the threat of pimples.

To add salt to the wound as a matter of speaking, pimples can occur practically anywhere on the body including the neck, scalp and back. Of course, the most dreaded area to have a pimple is the face as that is the most visible part of our body.

Cause

In order to get rid of pimples, I thought that it would help to gain some basic understanding behind the cause of them. Firstly, our bodies continuously shed layers of skin and at the same time, the pores of our skin secrete an oily substance called sebum. Sometimes, the dead skin doesn’t come off and become stuck to the sebum. When this happens the pore is blocked. As the pores produce even more sebum, this accumulation leads to growth of bacteria, which in turn develops into pimples.

Now that you have an idea of the cause, what are some of remedies you can turn to? Let’s go through the often sought possibilities and answer the questions most commonly asked.

Should I pop a pimple?

If you believe that learning how to get rid of pimples overnight involves merely popping them, then think again. Let me tell you right now that I do not recommend popping a pimple. Yes, maybe right after you do so, you think that it’s gone and within the next day, you’ll wake up with a clear skin. However, this will unlikely happen. How do I know this? I’ve tried this approach before with undesirable consequences. I’m referring to more than just the immediate pain associated with popping.

When you pop a pimple, it leaves the area of the skin broken, which means there isn’t an outer layer of skin to protect it from possible further infection. This will likely lead to more (and nastier) pimples developing, which then could result in scarring.

If you accidentally pop your pimple, you should clean the area with soap and water as quickly as possible. Also ensure that your hands are washed thoroughly (with soap of course) before you start cleaning the target area.

How to Get Rid of A Pimple with Over-The-Counter Medication

Of course, people are interested with how to get rid of pimples fast and the important step to achieve this is to treat the affected area as soon as you see the problem. The first approach you can take is to purchase face wash, soap or creams which contain Benzoyl-Peroxide and/or salicylic acid. Just have a look at the ingredient listing on the bottle or tube.

Take note that the concentration levels of benzoyl peroxide solutions can vary. Higher concentration is more effective against the more severe cases of pimples, but some people have sensitive skin so this can cause irritation and worsen your situation. It is best to start with the lowest concentration level and progress upwards if you’re not seeing results. Also, there are a small percentage of people allergic to this ingredient so if you’re not sure, you should seek advice from a medical professional such as a dermatologist.

How to Get Rid of Pimple with Prescription Medication

An alternative to over-the-counter solution is prescription medication. You should only consider this if you have attempted the other approaches and they have been ineffective. Discuss thoroughly with your general practitioner or dermatologist of the steps you have taken, how long you’ve had the issues and inform him/her of any allergies. There are mild antibiotics that can be used to reduce the pimples. However, prolonged use can lead to a development of resistance against the antibiotic. This means that you might notice this medication being less and less effective.
